Puzzle pieces, or composite animals, are an artistic motif that originated in Mughal India (1526-1858) and later spread to Persian and Turkish artistic circles. Typically these pieces consist of people and animals comprising an elephant, lion, human, or camel figure. The painting on this manuscript folio is a modern addition to an older Ottoman Turkish text offering religious advice.
