The first lesbian nightclub in San Francisco, Mona’s 440 Club was famous for its professional male impersonators and waitresses who dressed as men and sang naughty versions of popular songs. The club opened in 1934, shortly after the repeal of Prohibition, and helped establish North Beach as the first lesbian neighborhood in the city.
