George Platt Lynes met the American writer Gertude Stein when he was 18 and spending a year in Paris. Stein encouraged Lynes’ interest in photography, and helped sway him away from his plan to pursue a career as a literary publisher. Stein moved to France in 1903, and in 1907 she met Alice B. Toklas, the woman who would be her life partner until Stein’s death from cancer in 1946. Stein’s first financially successful book was The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas, published in 1933.
