George Platt Lynes met the artist Paul Cadmus in 1937 through Lincoln Kirstein, the philanthropist who later founded the New York City Ballet. With a common interest in the male nude as a subject, Lynes and Cadmus quickly became friends, sharing models and appearing in each other’s work. This portrait is one of a series of photographs for which Cadmus posed with fellow artist Jared French, wearing only torn t-shirts.
