A pioneering modernist in every sense, Jean Cocteau was a poet, novelist, dramatist, set designer, playwright and filmmaker of the Parisian avant-garde between the two world wars. His line drawings—simple, lyrical and descriptive—have been compared to Picasso’s, with whom he began a life-long friendship in 1915.
