Tony Midnite has been called “one of the legendary figures in the field of female impersonation”. He performed with the Jewel Box Revue in Chicago in the 1950s and later took the show to a Broadway stage in New York. He also achieved success as a costume designer. Midnite was inducted into the Chicago Gay and Lesbian Hall of Fame in 1996, partly for his determination to stand up to the Chicago police when they wanted to shut down drag clubs in the 1950s.
