Sam Steward was a man with many talents—he was a college English professor, but gave up that career to devote more time to his work as a professional tattoo artist. He was also the author of homoerotic novels (under the name Phil Andros), social histories and other non-fiction works. In 1977 he published Dear Sammy: Letters from Gertrude Stein and Alice B. Toklas, a memorial to his friendship with these two remarkable women.
